RealPage and Greystar settle DOJ antitrust case over software that enabled rent coordination, with data limits and penalties to promote fair rental markets.
The U.S. Department of Justice has settled with RealPage, a major rent-setting software provider, over allegations it enabled landlords to coordinate rent increases by sharing private pricing data.
Under the agreement, RealPage must limit data use to information at least 12 months old, remove features that encourage price matching, and undergo a three-year monitorship.
The settlement, if approved, aims to restore competition in rental markets.
Greystar, the nation’s largest apartment manager, also settled, agreeing to stop using RealPage’s software and pay $7 million in penalties across nine states.
While RealPage and Greystar deny wrongdoing, the DOJ says the actions will help prevent artificially inflated rents and promote fair competition.
