Montana's 2025 state Christmas tree, cut from Lolo National Forest, symbolizes forest health and wildfire reduction efforts, with public tree-cutting permits available.
Montana’s 2025 state Christmas tree, a Douglas fir from the Lolo National Forest near Seeley Lake, was harvested in a joint effort between state and federal agencies to promote forest health and reduce wildfire risk.
The tree will be lit in a public ceremony on December 1 at 5 p.m. in Helena’s Capitol rotunda.
Residents can obtain $10 permits for state trust land or $5 permits for National Forest land to cut their own trees, supporting sustainable forest management.
While Montana no longer ranks among top U.S. Christmas tree producers, the tradition continues as a seasonal and environmental stewardship effort.
