Maharashtra plans "Paatal Lok" tunnels to slash Mumbai traffic, boosting speeds to 80 km/h and cutting airport travel to 20 minutes by 2026.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans for a large underground tunnel network, dubbed "Paatal Lok," to alleviate Mumbai’s severe traffic congestion.
The project, aimed at increasing average travel speeds to 80 km/h, includes key tunnels such as Thane-Borivali, Mulund-Goregaon, and a Bandra-to-Bandra Kurla Complex link to cut airport travel time to 20 minutes.
It will complement the coastal road and metro expansions, with some components expected by 2026.
The Mumbai One app will enable unified transit tickets, while second-class train fares remain unchanged and all suburban services will transition to air-conditioned, closed-door trains.
