Iowa denies Satanic Temple’s Capitol event request, citing child safety and neutrality; ACLU calls it discriminatory.
Iowa officials have again denied The Satanic Temple of Iowa’s request to hold a holiday event in the Capitol rotunda, citing concerns over minors’ exposure to symbolic imagery and violations of religious neutrality policies.
The decision, based on established guidelines, follows last year’s rejection and comes amid a civil rights complaint by the ACLU, which alleges viewpoint-based discrimination.
The group plans to proceed with a December 13 event, though no alternative venue has been announced.
Former department director Adam Steen, now a GOP gubernatorial candidate, defended the denial, calling the event harmful to children and not protected speech.
The controversy stems from a 2023 display that was vandalized, leading to new restrictions on multi-day and annual events in the Capitol.
