Hamish Weir, 24, son of late Scotland rugby star Doddie Weir, has been named captain of Scotland’s team for Doddie Aid 2026, a nationwide fundraising event supporting motor neurone disease (MND) research.
The annual challenge, launched by former teammate Rob Wainwright, encourages people across the UK to log physical activity—such as walking, cycling, or playing sports—to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which Doddie founded in 2017.
Hamish, a first-team rugby player for Melrose, said he feels a deep personal responsibility to continue his father’s legacy, recalling the emotional impact of Doddie’s public diagnosis in 2017 and the family’s iconic walkout at Murrayfield, now celebrated as one of the stadium’s greatest moments.
He urged the public to participate, emphasizing that every effort contributes to the goal of ending MND.
The campaign features captains from England, Ireland, and Wales, with a focus on inclusivity and collective action.
