The GIFT Gardens initiative in the Quad Cities collected nearly 65,000 pounds of fresh produce—far exceeding its 5,000-pound goal—through a spring 2025 collaboration between University of Illinois and Iowa State Extension, Tapestry Farms, and River Bend Food Bank.
The program, which encouraged home and community gardeners to donate surplus harvests, supplied 18 food pantries and shelters, helping combat food insecurity in a region where one in eight adults and one in six children lack reliable access to nutritious food.
The effort, celebrated in November, highlighted community-driven solutions to hunger and food waste, with plans to expand in 2026.
