Former BBC adviser Michael Prescott testified that systemic editing flaws, not bias, caused issues, leading to top resignations and a Trump-led $5 billion legal threat.
Michael Prescott, a former BBC editorial standards adviser, testified before a UK parliamentary committee that the BBC is not institutionally biased despite systemic editorial flaws, including controversial editing of a Donald Trump speech in a Panorama documentary.
Prescott, who shared his concerns with government and regulatory bodies, said the issues stemmed from recurring failures to address deeper problems, not political ideology.
His memo led to the resignations of BBC Director General Tim Davie and News Chief Deborah Turness, prompted a $5 billion legal threat from Trump, and sparked calls for reform.
Prescott emphasized the BBC’s strong journalism but criticized its pattern of superficial fixes.
He denied being ideologically driven, calling himself a centrist, and said he would have acted similarly for any politician.
The BBC has since re-posted the director-general role.
