Fire and Emergency New Zealand seeks mediation over a 16-month pay dispute amid strikes and safety concerns.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has asked the Employment Relations Authority for independent facilitation to resolve a 16-month-old pay dispute with the NZ Professional Firefighters Union, citing ongoing strikes and public safety risks.
The agency’s latest offer, a 6.2% average pay rise over three years, was deemed unsustainable by the union, which proposed a significantly higher increase.
FENZ emphasized its pay increases over the past decade, financial reliance on insurance levies, and ongoing internal restructuring efforts, while urging the union to withdraw planned strikes.
A decision from the authority is pending.
