Billy Wayne Smith, 40, a former Mebane firefighter and current Durham Fire Department employee, faces multiple felony charges including first-degree arson, attempted arson, and assault after allegedly setting a fire in his home while his wife, child, and mother-in-law were inside.
Authorities say he assaulted his wife, causing serious facial injuries, and left plastic on a stove to ignite the fire.
Arrested on November 23, he is held on a $200,000 bond with a no-contact order.
The case is ongoing, and the Durham Fire Department is reviewing the situation.
