Dolby won a key German court ruling blocking Roku from using HEVC video tech, citing patent infringement.
On November 24, 2025, Dolby International AB secured a historic preliminary injunction in Germany against Roku for infringing a standard-essential patent related to the HEVC/H.265 video coding standard, believed to be the first such injunction in Europe and one of only three globally.
The ruling follows a German court upholding the patent’s validity and comes amid Roku’s efforts to block enforcement in U.S. courts.
The decision suggests the court viewed Roku as unwilling to negotiate a fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) license.
Access Advance, which manages patent pools for HEVC and VVC, praised the outcome as a step toward efficient licensing and innovation.
Roku may appeal.
