Bevan Shields has stepped down as editor of the Sydney Morning Herald after four years, citing health and future career plans, with chief reporter Jordan Baker appointed as his successor to take over in early 2026.
Shields will return to the newsroom in a senior writing role in 2026.
During his tenure, the Herald maintained its status as Australia’s most-read newspaper, expanded coverage in areas like state politics and investigative journalism, launched a Parramatta bureau, and earned awards for reporting on toxic chemicals.
Deputy editors Nick Ralston and Liam Phelan will lead during the transition, and Baker will report to executive editor Luke McIlveen alongside The Age’s editor Patrick Elligett and national editor David King.
