The Bahamas launched a blue carbon fund backed by a $50 million credit facility to conserve seagrass and generate carbon credits.
ArtCap Strategies has closed a senior secured credit facility to support the Bahamas’ National Blue Carbon Investment Fund, a sovereign vehicle established in 2022.
The funding, provided through ArtCap as sole arranger, will finance early-phase activities like ecosystem mapping, scientific validation, and carbon baseline establishment for the country’s blue carbon program.
The initiative focuses on conserving and restoring seagrass meadows, which cover an estimated 41% of the world’s known seagrass areas, and aims to generate revenue from high-integrity carbon credits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Over the next five years, proceeds are expected to support climate resilience, biodiversity, infrastructure, and social programs, marking a pioneering model for turning natural capital into sustainable national development financing.
