Australia boosts domestic violence support with $41.8M to handle 3,000% demand surge since 2010.
Australia’s 1800RESPECT domestic violence support service will receive an additional $41.8 million in funding, raising its total to $146.8 million through June 2027, to meet a 3,000% surge in demand since 2010.
The service handled over 342,000 interactions in the past year via calls, texts, online chats, and video counselling, including new SMS and video options.
Announced on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the funding aims to maintain rapid response times and expand access to trauma-informed care.
Officials emphasize the service’s role as a critical lifeline for survivors, especially those hesitant to use phone lines, and highlight broader efforts to combat gender-based violence under the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children.
