Volvo removes LiDAR from EX90 and ES90 due to supplier issues, relying on cameras and radars instead.
Volvo has dropped LiDAR technology from its EX90 and ES90 electric vehicles, ending its partnership with Luminar Technologies due to the supplier’s failure to meet contractual obligations and rising supply chain risks.
The move follows Volvo’s 2024 shift to make LiDAR optional, prompting a lawsuit from Luminar.
Though LiDAR was previously expected to reduce serious crashes by up to 20% and improve performance in various conditions, Volvo says safety remains high using five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors.
The EX90 earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating, with Australia expected to follow.
Around 30–40 LiDAR-equipped ES90s in Australia will be the last models with the technology, as Volvo plans to standardize hardware and software across models with Geely and expand hybrid offerings to cut costs.
