Vale of Glamorgan proposes housing priority based on local ties and need, with approvals for Barry’s Dales renovations.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is proposing a "cascade approach" for new social housing lettings, prioritizing residents with both local ties and urgent housing need, followed by those with high need regardless of ties, then local residents with moderate need.
The policy applies only to initial lets, not re-lets, and aims to strengthen community cohesion, especially in rural areas.
While 60% of homes in policy areas currently go to those in acute need, that rises to 93% without such rules, highlighting a trade-off between local connection and need.
The changes seek to balance both priorities.
Meanwhile, planning approval has been granted for renovations at 'The Dales' in Barry, including adjusted windows, removal of a stone chimney, a lean-to addition for a heat pump, and roof and dormer modifications.
