Sudan's military leader rejects U.S.-backed ceasefire, demands RSF withdrawal from cities amid worsening humanitarian crisis.
Sudan’s military chief, Gen. Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, has rejected a U.S.-led ceasefire proposal, calling it biased and unacceptable, demanding the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fully withdraw from civilian areas before any truce.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed over 40,000 people, displaced more than 14 million, and triggered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with widespread famine.
While the RSF agreed to a proposed three-month truce, Burhan accused the UAE of arming the RSF, a claim backed by U.S. intelligence, and criticized the U.S. envoy and other mediators for favoring the RSF.
The UN has urged an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded aid access.
