A Rochester man was charged with arson after allegedly setting fires to his car and his sister’s SUV, causing over $1,000 in damage.
A 44-year-old Rochester man, Matthew Clayton Hofbauer, has been charged with second-degree arson after allegedly setting fires to his own sedan and his sister’s SUV on May 19 at a southeast Rochester apartment complex.
Both vehicles were destroyed, with damages exceeding $1,000.
Police responded to flames in the parking lot, finding the SUV fully engulfed and the sedan just starting to burn.
Witnesses said Hofbauer had threatened to burn his sister’s car and was frustrated his own car wouldn’t start.
He was found fleeing and later told police the fire was an accident and a “stupid thing.” A state fire marshal investigation concluded the SUV fire was intentional and found evidence of a liquid accelerant.
Hofbauer was charged via summons and is scheduled for his first court appearance in the spring.
