Philippe Bolopion, a 13-year Human Rights Watch veteran and former UN correspondent who reported from conflict zones including Gaza, Darfur, and Haiti, has been named the organization’s new executive director.
He joined HRW in 2010, rising to deputy director for global advocacy, where he led efforts on crises in Myanmar, South Sudan, Yemen, and Palestine, helped push for peacekeeping missions, exposed arms sales linked to war crimes, and opposed Russia’s UN Human Rights Council membership.
Known for fearless reporting and strategic leadership, Bolopion now leads HRW during a period of global democratic decline and ongoing atrocities in Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, with priorities including accountability, investigative rigor, and countering disinformation.
