Ohio expands real-time drug alert system with new funding for public health support.
The SOAR Initiative’s Bad Batch Alerts text service, launched in 2019, warns Ohio residents in real time when dangerous drug batches—like those laced with fentanyl or xylazine—are detected in their ZIP code.
Users sign up by texting “SOAR” to regional numbers and can report suspicious substances.
The system, which has over 10,000 subscribers, is expanding with $200,000 in OneOhio funding for software upgrades and $100,000 from Franklin County to hire outreach coordinators who help users access harm reduction services.
Both Franklin County and Columbus are using opioid settlement funds—$10 million and nearly $3 million respectively—to support public health programs, including addiction counseling, naloxone, and clean needle exchanges.
The initiative continues to grow across Ohio’s 11 regions.
