Nigeria’s 2025 audit found $51M in questionable NNPC payments due to poor oversight and unapproved contracts.
An 808-page audit report released in September 2025 revealed over $51 million in questionable payments by Nigeria’s NNPC between 2020 and 2021, including unapproved contracts, unpaid taxes, and payments without invoices.
The report identified systemic failures, such as $529,863 in unpaid Stamp Duty and $22.84 million paid for outdated contracts with no reconciliation.
Despite claims of pandemic-related emergencies, $1.8 million was paid for vessel charters before approval.
The Auditor-General rejected NNPC’s documentation attempts as inadequate, demanded recovery of misused funds, and called for the Group CEO to explain the irregularities to the National Assembly.
The findings highlight serious governance issues and potential losses to public revenue.
