A Nigerian court dismissed false claims of an assassination attempt on a judge who sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life in prison.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed claims of an assassination attempt on Justice James Omotosho, calling the report—originating from a social media blogger—“completely false and unfounded.” The court, through Chief Registrar Sulaiman Hassan, labeled the story fake news, warning it could cause panic and undermine public trust in the judiciary.
It urged security agencies to investigate and prosecute those responsible under Nigeria’s cybercrime and defamation laws.
The false report emerged after Omotosho sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment on terrorism charges, with additional sentences for membership in a banned group and illegal possession of a radio transmitter.
The judge exercised mercy, sparing Kanu the death penalty despite legal authority to impose it.
