Newcastle bus drivers strike over pay, safety, and conditions, rejecting a proposed deal.
Newcastle bus drivers are on a 24-hour strike over pay, safety, and working conditions, refusing to run services if the prior one is more than six minutes late.
The Rail, Tram and Bus Union says the action, part of a broader "Calendar of Chaos," pressures Keolis Downer Hunter (KDH) to improve conditions under private operation.
KDH offered a four-year deal with a 15.5% pay rise for most drivers and an additional 8% for trainees, potentially reaching $40 per hour, plus back pay and unchanged conditions.
The union claims the offer only meets government minimums, criticizes KDH for delaying talks, and warns against pay deductions for strike participation.
KDH says it made a fair offer after 24 negotiations, respects workers’ rights, and will pay employees as required by law, urging a vote to resolve the dispute.
