A Fiji journalist was attacked post-trial, prompting new court safety rules.
Following a violent attack on Fijian journalist Apenisa Waqairadovu outside a courtroom on November 24, 2025, Acting Commissioner Aporosa Lutunauga ordered all court defendants to be handcuffed from the back to improve safety.
The assault occurred after Sairusi Ceinaturaga, convicted of murdering his one-year-old child, broke free from a single officer’s escort and chased, threatened, and pushed Waqairadovu down stairs, causing injuries.
The Fijian Media Association condemned the police for inadequate security, citing past incidents and demanding systemic reforms, including secure perimeters and stronger escort protocols.
A full investigation is underway, and journalists are encouraged to report similar incidents to police or Internal Affairs.
