Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones, a Democrat, has announced his plan to run for Alabama governor in 2026, challenging Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is the early frontrunner. Jones, who served in the Senate from 2018 to 2021 and previously was U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, is the last Democrat to hold a statewide office in the state. He will file paperwork soon, following weeks of speculation. Tuberville, who defeated Jones in 2020, has raised over $7 million and remains a top contender. Other candidates include Republican Ken McFeeters and Democrats Will Boyd and Chad “Chig” Martin. The primary is set for May 19, 2026.
