David Austin, the getaway driver in the 2004 murder of Charlie Butler, died in prison in December 2024.
David Austin, convicted in 2012 of aiding the 2004 murder of Dagenham wheelclamping company owner Charlie Butler, died in prison on December 1, 2024, from a thrombotic stroke while serving a life sentence with a 30-year minimum term.
He was identified as the getaway driver in the case, which remained unsolved until 2006 when CCTV footage aired on BBC’s Crimewatch led to the arrest of shooter Douglas Johnson.
Both men were sentenced after a third trial, though Butler’s wife and step-daughter, alleged to have hired Johnson, were not prosecuted.
Austin was imprisoned at HMP Long Lartin at the time of his death.
