A Chinese study links ancient hanging coffin people to a modern Yunnan group via shared DNA, showing migration from Fujian to Southeast Asia.
A Chinese-led study published in Nature Communications reveals a genetic link between ancient hanging coffin practitioners and a modern community in Yunnan, with 43% to 79% of the group’s ancestry tracing to the Zhaotong population.
Analyzing DNA from 30 modern individuals and 15 ancient remains across China and northern Thailand, researchers found shared ancestry supporting a migration route from Fujian to the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and into Southeast Asia.
Two 1,200-year-old Zhaotong burials showed diverse genetic origins, suggesting cultural inclusivity during the Tang Dynasty.
Further research is planned to expand the genetic and cultural database.
