Armidale, New South Wales, is moving forward with plans to create a 13-hectare botanic garden at its gateway, aiming to boost tourism and reinforce its reputation as the New England’s gardening hub.
Led by horticulturist Ned McDowell and supported by festival founder Lou Forsythe, the project will feature themed plantings like cherry walks and a Japanese box maze, developed in three stages with funding from grants and community tree pledges.
Designed to attract visitors year-round, it will showcase cold-climate flora and support education and local businesses.
The initiative builds on a vision dating to 1988 and complements the city’s heritage arboretum.
Meanwhile, the council is assessing community feedback on a proposed food-focused community garden on Donnelly Street, with a report due in early 2026.
