UK inquiry launched into sharp drop in children's pleasure reading, down to 33% since 2005.
A UK parliamentary committee has launched an inquiry into a sharp decline in children reading for pleasure, with only 33% of young people aged eight to 18 now reading for enjoyment—down from 51% in 2005.
The inquiry, led by Chairwoman Helen Hayes, will examine the impact of screen time, mental health, and educational disparities, including how reading promotion could help disadvantaged students and those with special needs.
Evidence is being collected until January 9, with recommendations expected to guide government policy.
This follows the government’s plan for a new statutory reading test for Year 8 students and a Canadian study linking high screen use to lower reading and math performance.
