Senate passes bill to expand First Nations status eligibility via one-parent rule, affecting ~6,000 people.
Senators have passed amendments to Bill S-2, proposing to replace the current "second-generation cutoff" with a one-parent rule, allowing First Nations status to be passed down if either parent is registered.
The change could make about 6,000 additional people eligible for status, addressing long-standing gender inequities in the Indian Act.
While supported by many First Nations leaders and witnesses, Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty emphasized that final decisions must involve extensive consultation with First Nations communities, as status eligibility should be determined locally.
The bill now moves to the House of Commons, where further revisions are possible.
