Russia’s Yantar vessel jammed GPS and targeted UK ships and planes near Scotland, prompting UK military alerts and a submarine response.
A Russian research vessel, the Yantar, allegedly used GPS jamming and laser targeting against a Royal Navy frigate and RAF aircraft near Scotland, UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
The incident, the first confirmed use of lasers against UK military aircraft by Russia, was labeled "deeply dangerous."
While the frigate’s military GPS was unaffected, civilian systems on nearby fishing vessels were disrupted.
The Yantar, linked to Russia’s GUGI unit and suspected of mapping undersea cables, has been operating near UK waters for weeks.
The UK has updated its rules of engagement and deployed a submarine to track the vessel, warning that further incursions could provoke a military response.
