Ontario’s legislature unveiled festive decorations early, using rented items and spending far less than approved, to welcome the public year-round.
Ontario’s Queen’s Park legislature has been decorated for the holidays with illuminated hedges, reindeer lights, festive trees, and interior displays including poinsettias and lighted chandeliers under Speaker Donna Skelly’s initiative to boost public access and engagement.
The upgrades, installed earlier than usual using artificial trees, will remain through January, including Orthodox Christmas.
While the Board of Internal Economy approved $500,000 for decor with $150,000 annually for upkeep, actual spending was significantly lower, with most items rented.
Skelly emphasized making the historic site more welcoming, particularly for rural Ontarians, though critics questioned the cost.
