A research project beginning December 1, 2025, in New Zealand’s Parininihi Marine Reserve will compare kōura populations inside and outside the protected area using 50 craypots in each zone.
Led by the Department of Conservation and Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Tama, the study will assess kōura abundance, size, sex ratio, and health, with all caught individuals measured and released.
The effort aims to evaluate marine reserve effectiveness, support cultural stewardship, and inform the public that no harvesting occurs.
Fieldwork depends on weather conditions and involves DOC and tribal representatives on a commercial vessel.
