flag A new 0.5-mile traffic-free trail is proposed to safely connect two cycling routes in the Lake District by bypassing a dangerous road crossing.

A new 0.5-mile traffic-free trail linking Threlkeld Quarry to the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail is proposed to improve safe, off-road access between National Cycle Network Routes 6 and 7 in the Lake District. Led by National Highways and the Lake District National Park Authority, the project would bypass a dangerous A66 crossing by passing under the road, following the River Greta, and using the former Cockermouth-Penrith railway line to reach the LDNPA’s Threlkeld offices car park. It aims to enhance connectivity for residents, workers, and visitors, reduce parking pressure in Threlkeld village, support local tourism, and provide year-round active travel options. Public consultation in 2024 showed 88% support from 344 respondents.
