A Manitoba man delayed treatment for a severe heart attack, leading to lasting heart damage.
Manitoba man Haimana Romana says he experienced severe chest pain in July 2022 and was treated at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre with a CTAS level 2 triage but received no blood work despite worsening symptoms.
After leaving and going to St. Boniface Hospital, he was diagnosed with a STEMI heart attack, with troponin levels five times normal, requiring immediate care.
Doctors said he had less than 90 minutes to avoid permanent damage.
He now has heart failure with reduced function.
A cardiologist called the delay “unfortunate and not standard of care,” while Shared Health confirmed standard triage protocols are used.
The case highlights concerns about timely diagnosis and emergency care coordination.
