Indian Railways surpassed 1 billion tonnes of freight loading in the 2025–26 fiscal year, reaching 1,020 million tonnes by November 19, driven by strong demand for coal, iron ore, cement, and container traffic.
Daily freight loading averaged 4.4 million tonnes, up from 4.2 million tonnes the previous year, with April to October 2025 freight volumes at 935.1 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase.
The system introduced reforms including a bulk-cement terminal policy and revised container rates to improve efficiency, reduce transit times, and lower logistics costs.
