Cuban economist Alejandro Gil Fernández sentenced to life in prison in secret trial, sister says.
María Victoria Gil, sister of former Cuban Economy Minister Alejandro Gil Fernández, says her brother was accused of spying for the CIA in a politically driven case orchestrated by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, not President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
She claims Gil was dismissed in February 2024, detained without legal process, and sentenced to life in prison after a secret trial, with no public evidence or transparency.
She denies the espionage charges, calls the justice system controlled by State Security, and says her brother refused Spanish citizenship despite eligibility, leaving his children unable to claim it under Spain’s Law of Democratic Memory.
The Cuban government has not acknowledged the trial or its outcome.
