Norfolk Southern invests $20M in East Palestine’s emergency training center, boosting regional preparedness post-2023 derailment.
A first responder training center in East Palestine, Ohio, has been revived with a $20 million Norfolk Southern investment to fund its construction through Youngstown State University.
The facility, set on a 15-acre site, will train fire, police, and emergency medical personnel in hazardous incidents, search and rescue, and confined space operations, with East Palestine agencies receiving free, priority access.
YSU will operate the center, integrating it into its fire sciences programs and workforce development efforts.
A separate $25 million endowment ensures long-term sustainability.
The project, supported by state and federal leaders including Governor Mike DeWine and Senator JD Vance, aims to boost regional emergency preparedness and economic growth following the 2023 train derailment.
