A New Zealand woman was sentenced for attacking a man during a parking dispute, ordered to pay $500 in compensation and serve six months’ supervision.
Stevee Ormsby, 32, was sentenced to six months’ supervision and ordered to pay $500 in emotional harm compensation after assaulting Russell Watts, 63, during a parking dispute in Tauranga on April 2, 2024.
Watts, who documented illegal parking for safety reasons, said Ormsby grabbed him by the neck, struck him on the left side of his head, and caused lasting injuries including a head dent, nerve damage, and ongoing pain and anxiety.
The judge rejected Ormsby’s self-defense claim, calling it unreliable, and noted the significant emotional impact on Watts despite ACC covering most medical costs.
Ormsby, a chartered accountant, sought a discharge without conviction to protect her career, but the court emphasized that professional fitness is determined by licensing bodies, not courts.
No apology or community service was offered, and the judge deemed the offense moderately serious.
