A New Zealand couple's Ford F-150 failed after using 95-octane fuel, but a tribunal blamed prior fuel use and vehicle age, not the dealer or manufacturer.
A New Zealand couple bought a 2016 Ford F-150 Shelby in 2022 and were told by their dealer it was safe to use 95-octane fuel, though the vehicle recommended 98-octane.
After the engine failed at 45,000 km, a tribunal ruled the failure resulted from using lower-octane fuel, but found neither the dealer nor Shelby New Zealand liable.
The tribunal concluded the damage was likely inevitable due to prior fuel use and the vehicle’s age and mileage, shifting defect risk to the buyers.
The couple spent nearly $40,000 on repairs and now question the vehicle’s reliability.
