Martin Suter was sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-wife at their son’s grave, blaming her for their son’s 2003 death.
Martin Suter, 68, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 27 years and 109 days for murdering his ex-wife, Ann Blackwood, 71, at their son’s grave in Crofton Cemetery, Hampshire, on July 24, 2023—the 36th anniversary of their son’s birth.
Suter, who pleaded guilty to murder and indecent assault on a child under 14, waited five hours before stabbing Blackwood with a kitchen knife and slashing her with scissors she had brought to trim flowers.
He confessed to police, blaming her for their son’s 2003 accidental death, which the coroner ruled was not suicide.
The judge described the attack as "wicked," noting the victim’s vulnerability and the peaceful setting.
Suter, diagnosed with autism and depression, showed no remorse, and was also sentenced to 121 additional days for the assault charge.
Blackwood, a beloved teacher and community member, was remembered as kind and caring by family and friends, who called the crime incomprehensible and devastating.
