Five saplings from the felled Sycamore Gap tree are being planted nationwide to honor its legacy and promote environmental resilience.
Five saplings grown from the illegally felled Sycamore Gap tree, which stood near Hadrian’s Wall for over a century before being cut down in September 2023, are being planted as National Tree Week begins.
The 49 “trees of hope” were nurtured from seeds and material rescued by the National Trust, with the first plantings occurring at sites including Coventry’s Tree Sanctuary, a mining disaster memorial, Greenham Common, and healthcare facilities in Leeds, Northumberland, and Sunderland.
One sapling was gifted to the King, and over 500 communities applied to host a tree.
Additional plantings are planned in UK national parks in early 2026 and at a local school in December.
The effort honors the original tree and symbolizes resilience and environmental stewardship.
