Devonshire Poultry seeks to expand its West Ashton facility to improve chicken welfare without increasing flock size.
Devonshire Poultry has applied to Wiltshire Council to expand its West Ashton poultry houses, adding nearly 2,200 sq m of space to accommodate up to 260,000 chickens without increasing overall flock numbers.
The expansion, driven by higher welfare standards demanded by supermarkets, aims to improve living conditions as birds are raised for 42 days, with partial removals around day 30 and all transported off-site for processing.
The site, operating since the late 1980s, averages seven production cycles yearly and includes a 2024 solar-powered facility.
Waste bedding is spread as manure on nearby farmland.
The company says no new risks from noise, odor, or pests are expected due to stable bird numbers and no homes within 400 meters.
