A Des Moines school district report found it reasonably relied on a firm that missed key red flags in hiring former superintendent Ian Roberts, who was arrested for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and possessing firearms.
A Des Moines Public Schools report released on November 21, 2025, found the district reasonably relied on national search firm JG Consulting when hiring former superintendent Ian Roberts, who was arrested in September 2025 on federal charges of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship.
The investigation revealed JG Consulting provided an abbreviated seven-year background check, missed key records including a 2012 Maryland reckless driving conviction and a 2022 Pennsylvania weapons charge, and submitted a resume with a minor but unflagged discrepancy in Roberts’ education history.
Roberts, originally from Guyana, also falsely claimed a doctorate and was found with four firearms, including one in his school vehicle.
The district, which paid $35,000 to JG Consulting, plans to use the findings in an ongoing lawsuit against the firm, which denies responsibility, stating it was not legally obligated to verify immigration status.
Roberts has resigned and is awaiting trial in March 2026.
