A bronze statue honoring Pauline Menczer, the first Bondi Beach surfer to win a world title in 1993, was unveiled at Bondi Beach in 2025.
Overcoming rheumatoid arthritis, sexism, and lack of sponsorship, Menczer won without prize money and later gained wider recognition through the documentary *Girls Can’t Surf*, which led to a $150,000 community campaign funding the statue.
The sculpture, by Cathy Weiszmann, depicts her youthful determination.
Menczer, now a carer and advocate, said the tribute resonates deeply with those facing adversity.
The event coincided with milestones in women’s surfing, including equal prize money and the return of champion Stephanie Gilmore.
