A R360 million SAPS health contract awarded to Medicare24 was canceled amid scrutiny over compliance and corruption allegations.
A R360 million SAPS health services contract awarded to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Medicare24 Tshwane District was defended by Lt-Gen Molefe Fani before a parliamentary committee, who said the procurement process followed proper procedures despite the company failing to sign a required franchise agreement, making it non-compliant.
The tender, launched in November 2023 and awarded in June 2024, received 22 bids, with the committee approving it using a matrix sheet and noting no material issues.
Fani said the committee was unaware of allegations raised by a corruption investigator that the company lacked tax clearance, was blacklisted, or was linked to the Tembisa Hospital scandal—claims made in a letter to the national police commissioner prior to the award.
The contract has since been cancelled amid ongoing scrutiny over procurement integrity within SAPS.
