Norway’s Vianode to build $3.2B graphite plant in Ontario, creating 1,000 jobs and cutting Chinese reliance for EVs and other industries.
Norwegian company Vianode will build a $3.2 billion synthetic graphite plant in St. Thomas, Ontario, backed by a $670 million provincial loan, creating up to 1,000 jobs and producing enough material for 3 million electric vehicles annually.
The facility, set to open in 2027, will use hydroelectric power and North American raw materials to reduce reliance on Chinese-supplied graphite, supporting EV, nuclear, steel, semiconductor, and defense industries.
While Premier Doug Ford calls it a transformative investment, it won’t offset over 4,100 recent auto sector job losses in Brampton and Ingersoll.
Despite challenges in the EV market, Ontario attracted over $40 billion in investment last year, with political stability cited as a key factor.
