A new digital archive reveals Nehru's 1961 rejection of Punjab’s request for funding to build Chandigarh.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund has released a digital archive of 77,000 pages from Nehru’s personal and official documents, including letters detailing his disagreements with Punjab’s Chief Minister Partap Singh Kairon over funding the Chandigarh capital project.
In a 1961 letter, Kairon reported Rs 22.2 crore spent, with Rs 8.53 crore deemed unproductive, and requested a Rs 7.53 crore subsidy, citing prior assurances.
Nehru declined, citing financial constraints and unclear responsibility.
The archive also includes correspondence urging respect for architect Le Corbusier and key officials, with future phases to feature letters from figures like Rabindranath Tagore and private letters if offered by Sonia Gandhi.
