Former POW Robert Stirm, iconic for the "Burst of Joy" photo, died at 92 on Veterans Day.
Former U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm, known for the iconic "Burst of Joy" photograph taken upon his release as a Vietnam War POW in 1973, has died at 92.
Shot down in 1967, he spent 1,966 days in captivity across five camps, including the "Hanoi Hilton," where he communicated with fellow POW John McCain via tapping code.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning image captured his emotional reunion with family at Travis Air Force Base.
Though the photo became a symbol of national hope, Stirm later expressed discomfort with its fame, citing personal struggles including a divorce after returning, prompted by a "Dear John" letter.
He died on Veterans Day, November 20, 2025, at an assisted living facility in Fairfield, California.
