Former jail boss sues Grand Forks County over alleged age discrimination and retaliation after his firing post-consolidation.
Bret Burkholder, former Grand Forks County jail administrator, is suing the county, two commissioners, and Sheriff Andy Schneider, alleging age discrimination and retaliation for opposing the jail’s consolidation with the sheriff’s office, which he claimed violated legal and contractual rules.
He says he was fired without due process after nearly 20 years of unblemished service, despite praise from staff and agencies, and that his termination was retaliatory.
The county says the consolidation was a cost-saving measure and that the sheriff made the final decision.
Burkholder’s $153,372 salary exceeded that of the new jail captain, while Schneider’s pay rose to $160,120.
Commissioners deny age bias, and the lawsuit, filed Nov. 20, seeks to protect Burkholder’s reputation and rights.
