ExxonMobil restarts Mozambique LNG project halted since 2021 due to insurgency, with production targeted for 2030.
ExxonMobil has resumed its liquefied natural gas project in Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin, lifting a force majeure declaration that paused operations since 2021 due to a jihadist insurgency in Cabo Delgado.
The company, holding a 25% stake in the project, is working with partners and the Mozambican government to advance development, with a final investment decision expected in 2026 and production targeted for 2030.
The project, part of a multinational consortium including ENI, CNPC, XRG, and KOGAS, had been halted amid violence that caused over 6,200 deaths since 2017.
TotalEnergies also resumed operations in October, while Mozambique’s government plans to audit losses from the suspension.
ExxonMobil has not confirmed whether it will seek compensation.
